Things You Can Do In Your Spare Time
The world is busy everyday. As the earth's non-stop spinning continues, so does the work of civilization. While the citizens of the West rest comfortably in sleep, the people of the East continue with their daily lives - parents going to work, children going to school, and other people each with their own role in society. If you're going to look closely, you'll realize sooner or later that the world doesn't rest, but us humans are the ones who do. But sometimes though, we get more free time than we need or expect that, aside from resting, there are also a lot of other things for us to do. Now here's a list of just some of those things that you might be able to enjoy with your excess free time:
1. Read Books
Now first on the list is reading books. Books have been widely used for informational purposes since the ancient times, but as time went by it has also been a good source of entertainment. Books have never gone out of style. Even with the advancement of technology and the introduction of smartphones and tablets, reading books is still a popular choice for a lot of people both adults and the younger generation, especially with the continuous production of such amazing stories coming from great writers such as Rick Riordan, with his popular "Percy Jackson" series. Reading books is a great pastime because not only would one witness either the greatness or misery of a different persona's life, but with the proper use of imagination may also form a new world filled with wonders. Of course these texts are not limited to only fantasies filled with magic, vampires, and mythical creatures, but also includes a wide variety of other genres such as mystery and action. There are books like Ian Fleming's "James Bond" series, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Complete Collection of Sherlock Holmes" that tackle stories filled with mystery, but there are also classic fantasies like J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, and J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" series, which are all good reads, depending on the genre you like.
2. Do Physical Activities
Be it basketball, baseball, volleyball, or soccer, playing sports also never gets old. It helps the body stay healthy and fit, because having your body stay inactive for long times might make it used to only little motion, not having the ability to move easily anymore, if not making it dormant. It also helps with social life because it improves how we interact others, through the help of the concept of sportsmanship - for example it can help strengthen the bond between family members such as father and son, or between brothers. Playing sports also helps in releasing a lot of stress, because you're having fun playing with other people, making you forget your problems. Experts also say that physical activities produce endorphins, which are chemicals that help the body and mind to relax, therefore reducing stress. Cycling and jogging are also some of the other physical activities that can greatly help reduce stress. Doing physical activities is a great activity to do during your spare time, because it does not only let you enjoy, but it also helps in relaxing your mind.
3. Go Fishing
Live near a river, lake, or the sea? Well you've just reeled in a good catch, because it's time to go fishing. Fishing is a good practice of meditation to empty your mind into nothingness, not thinking of any problems and just focusing in relaxing your mind and your spirit. It is also a good way to improve patience and determination, for getting a good catch requires a lot of time. Fish don't always come and bite the hook, especially the good ones, but with patience and strong-willingness, no matter how many times you fail you may soon get a jackpot if you keep on retrying and relying onto your patience. Fishing is fun, because you don't only get to improve your patience and focus, but you also get to know and see different types of fish that will fill that empty afternoon stomach of yours.
4. Make a Garden
Gardening might sound like what only old people such as your grandmother would do, digging soil, growing flowers, watering each one every morning, but no it's not that way. Gardening has been a practice at home since the ancient times, most especially for the purpose of growing food for the household, and has now changed as a widely spread trend in home decoration, with the concept of growing flowers and other attractive plants instead of vegetables. Gardening is actually pretty immersing because it helps you learn how to value and take great care of an object - which in this case is a plant. It is also beneficial for people because it helps, not only in making your house look good, but also in lightening the mood and atmosphere around your home. If fruit trees and vegetables are also planted, it helps the household in easily obtaining trustworthy, and healthy food, plus a garden is a great place to relax while drinking tea and reading books, giving you a new refuge to go to whenever you are frustrated.
5. Go Out on an Adventure
Well if you really have too much free time (and money), that you will easily get so bored at home, you might as well go out on an adventure of your own. Go out and have a vacation at the beach, where you can sit on a bench under a tree while silently watching the sun set over the water, and where you can feel the breeze calmly passing through your skin. You may also try bold new things such as hiking mountains with your friends, or camping on a forest together with the family. You may also simply enjoy tours on historical places, where you might learn new things about the past, or go to art galleries to appreciate the beauty of creation.
There are just too many things that may be done in this world - some are extreme and complicated, making it hard to achieve; while some are just simple, satisfying activities that can help strengthen bonds between people. Time is the enemy in trying all of those things, but these have been a list of activities I suggest are great things that can be done when spending the free time that is given to us.
