How to Write a Short Poem

Poems have been one of the most widely appreciated forms of literature aside from books and short stories.  It conveys different, deep meanings, one which may reveal a light happy story or if looked within more critically, might actually reveal a dark secret laid down by the author.  It is known to most people, be it young readers who learn and read it on school, or adults who let out their emotions through poetry.  Now you yourself might also be interested in writing poems, either you just want to write about the good weather or you want to impress someone with your romantic poetry, so here are a few simple tips in writing a short poem.

1. Think of an appropriate theme.

Think of a specific topic to write about first.  Thinking of a topic doesn't actually require much effort, especially when you are significantly taken by a particular thing.  You might start getting inspiration from the things you usually do, the things you like, and the things that make you happy. The people around you, especially those who are closest to you are also great starting points for writing poems, because they are one of the things that make you get the most out of your life, and they are the ones with whom you share your memories with.  There are a lot of topics that may be written down to a poem, but starting from yourself is one of the best ways to have your own topic.

2. Start writing down words

After you've done selecting your topic, you may now begin to write a draft of your poem.  You may start by writing down what you think or how you feel about your topic. If you are a newbie, you may want to try to literally write down every details about your topic, and then later shorten it out by removing possibly unnecessary details and leaving behind the most significant ones.  You may then replace some of the words to at least give the poem more vibe, by trying to give it rhyming words and matching measurements, so it would be pleasant to read.  If you already have some experience in writing poems though, then you may want to try to use a bit of symbolism, using other things and objects to represent another to give the poem a  deep, hidden meaning; allowing readers to pick up their own contexts from the poem based on their own different perspectives.

3. Finalize your poem

After spending some time and ink on your draft, it's time to finalize your poem.  Rewrite your words, use deeper words if you like your poem to have multiple contexts for different people, or just use plain, yet striking words instead if you want to keep it simple and clean.  Grab a new sheet of paper or two, preferably colored ones for the decorative value, and rewrite your poem cleanly with your final desired output.  Additionally you might want to increase your poem's presentation by adding designs, and choosing colors that best matches your poem's topic or theme, especially if you plan to give your poem to somebody as a gift or a more creative form of giving him/her a message than a letter.

    1. You think of a topic and write what you know or feel about it. Then you change the words you use, to make the poem sound pleasant, through the use of rhymes, and other poetic elements.

  4. Do you think poems are still appreciated in this generation? It's kinda' forgotten coz' of the continuous evolution of technology. Also there are no more poets that stand out in public that's why people think that no one writes a poem anymore.
